Eido da Fonte is a story in the making for approximately 100 years now. The grandfather of Jesus Puga, the current family member at the helm of Eido da Fonte, was a grape farmer and wine producer. Back then, the wine was sold as bulk wine and it was transported in oak barrels. Jesus’ father transformed the wine production into a “colleiteiro” by registering it under the Rias Baixas appellation. The “colleiteiro” figure refers to small wine producers that used to produce less tan 60,000 lts of wine per year. Currently Eido da Fonte owns 14 hectares of land and they are in the process of planting additional 10 hectares. 100 years back this incipient producer, who only recently opened a new and modern facility right by the Minho river in the heart of the Condado de Tea, a sub-appellation of Rias Baixas. We are very proud to be part of the history of this family and share with you a varietal that everybody loves, even though they may not know it yet.
The vineyards are arranged using different growth methods: ascending, descending, freestanding, etc. This is done to achieve different levels of ripeness, which results in a wide spectrum of aromas, flavors and sensations.
The harvest is done manually when the grape achieves the desired balance of acidity and sweetness. The vineyard yields range between 7,000 – 8,000 kg/hectare.
Vinification is done after cooling the grapes to avoid a spontaneous fermentation. After pressing the grapes, the juice ferments and ages in stainless steel tanks.
